This piece is pure fantasy. I can only imagine how startled a predator would be to see this butterfly’s wings flash open to reveal eyes and fangs.

It is covered with hand made leather foliage to give a jungle effect.

This Moth feeds on different trees. The Maple tree is one of them so I places some leather Maple leaves at the base.

I also used an old pipe fitting and an antique spindle to give height to the sculpture.

How many leaves are there? I like the mimicry of the leaf butterflies so creating natural leaves to go with this sculpture was a must. Although I did take some artistic licence here and there.

The branch is real and, as a precaution , has been treated with a sealant.

One little jewel landing , for a moment, on a solid metal arch embedded in “rock”.

To get the piece of old iron farm equipment to fit the clay “rock” was a feat of engineering in itself. I like the feeling of strength and fragility.

The Black Witch

The Black Witch is an actual moth and is considered to be either a good or a bad omen depending on where you live. It sits atop a mask which sits upon a geode with leather foliage.

This huge moth can be lighter or darker in colouration . I have painted it in a lighter phase.

Easter Island

I wanted to create a really colourful butterfly. One that you would never really see. The turquoise and orange on the dorsal side are two colours that seem to vibrate when used together, but it’s the underside that holds the most colour!

The colours are pure Easter and the face reminded me of the Easter Island heads.

This butterflies name , Buddha, inspired the sculpture. I wanted to create a serine , calm feeling. I think the use of soft colours for the leather foliage and a peaceful face achieve this effect.

The colours of the amazing butterfly are somewhat unique . The colour pink is rare to see in a butterfly or moth. Although this butterfly lives in the dense forests of New Guinea I have chosen to display it on an old drain pipe. It speaks to the distruction of forests for man’s endeavors.

This giant of the rain forest is highly toxic. As a result it has no natural enemies.

I had a great time creating this sculpture. I thought that it did not need much foliage as it would distract from the colourful ventral and dorsal side .

This large butterfly was named after “Priam” the king of Troy during the Trojan war.

They are referred to as “Bird wing “ butterflies because of their unusually shaped wings. The ventral side is as amazingly coloured as the dorsal side.

Now this beautiful iridescent butterfly from New Guinea is protected against overselling but not from the destruction of habitat.

This imaginary butterfly feeds solely on Dandelions and Clover. It feeds only at night and is very rarely seen. It is considered a delicacy by all nocturnal animals and reptiles.

It is believed to be extinct.

Although the Viceroy can be found throughout North America it is the state butterfly of Kentucky.

The Viceroy exhibits polymorphism. It mimics the Monarch or the Queen butterfly depending on which butterflies territory it is in.

I have painted this Viceroy in the tawny orange colours of the Monarch.

I created this imaginary little insect in a response to the shape of the Maple keys I saw falling from the trees. The hind wings are fashioned in the shape of the leaves.

This stunning butterfly is the 2nd largest in the world. Although it is only the female that reaches Goliath proportions. The larva feed on poisonous plants and as a result the butterfly is poisonous.

With this sculpture the inspiration came from the found piece and clay rock. They balanced nicely and left a perch for the butterfly to sit upon.

Hyalophora - cercropia

A neighbor of mine had this amazing creature emerge from a cocoon it had made on her garden urn. I took many pictures . I went back the next morning and honestly expected it to be gone but there were now two of them. The first one ,being a female, had attracted a much smaller male over night and was now mating. They stayed the rest of the day and then that evening flew away.

I chose to mount it on an old funnel, somewhat urn shaped.

They are born without mouth parts and cannot eat. They only live two weeks. Long enough to mate and lay eggs. My encounter with them was truly once in my lifetime and I consider myself lucky .

This is one of the largest moths. It’s wing span can be up to 12 inches . For protection it uses its wing pattern as camouflage on tree trunks.

This butterfly is called “The king of the forest”

It can fly up to 30 kms. in 2 or 3 hours.

I wanted to make this butterfly because of it’s wonderful patterns. It does not have the metallic blue colour that one associates with the Morphos but it is equally as beautiful.

I have attached it to a fantastically rusty stove grate (sealed to prevent further rusting) and imbedded that into one of my handmade stoneware “rocks”.
